What is the Better Chicken Commitment?
The Better Chicken Commitment is the leading set of standards for broiler welfare driving the food industry towards higher animal welfare practices.
The BCC is a science-based chicken welfare policy that addresses issues related to breeding for fast-growth and high-yield, housing, stocking density, and slaughter. It requires more room for the chickens, added light including natural light and darkness at night.
The University of Guelph, in partnership with Global Animal Partnership (GAP), recently concluded a two year study on broiler chicken welfare that definitely found the breed of chicken to be the most critical component for animal welfare. As a result, GAP released a list of approved breeds for their welfare certification which is required by the Better Chicken Commitment. Cooks Venture is one of a small number of approved breeds based on the University of Guelph study.

Our Pioneer birds are raised in an active environment, spending their days outside on pasture and in forests foraging for insects, perching, dust bathing, all day long, every day; how chickens should naturally live. They sleep at night in low density housing.
